What exactly IS Digital Burn?
Digital Burn is a cyberpunk-style resource compatible with Wizards of the
Coast's #1 selling d20 system and is designed to function seamlessly with
their upcoming Modern d20 release. It provides a complete campaign
setting for role-play in the Dark Future - including event profiles that
describe the world of Digital Burn, how it was formed, and where it's
headed. It is also designed to be easily expandable and adaptable by Game
Masters to allow players to recreate other Dark Future settings - from
your favorite movies to comics and beyond.
Really? An RPG? Whats that?
From http://www.wizards.com/roleplaying/whatis.asp:
"It is kind of like the Make-Believe you played as a child, when you
played the doctor, teacher, soldier, or nurse. When you played
Make-Believe, you put yourself in the role of those people and played out
their activities as you envisioned them. The doctor and nurse took care
of the sick stuffed animals. The soldier shot imaginary enemies. The
teacher pretended to write on the blackboard. Whatever roles you and your
friends were playing, you pretended to do the things you thought those
people would do. That, in essence, is roleplaying."
It's an interactive play, with a storyteller (the Game Master), and
actors or Players, using dice to determine the outcome of random events.
D&D is the considered among the Grandfathers of table-top RPGs.
Why is it called Digital Burn?
That would be telling. You'll have to read the book.
So is this just D&D with guns?
You got your d20 System in my cyberpunk! You got your cyberpunk in my d20
System! While it is easily possible for you to add components from your
favorite d20 product into the world of Digital Burn, DB has no native
magic or anything along those lines. It's straight hard edge cyberpunk
genre in d20, with cybernetics, big guns and the Full Immersion Internet.
It's a completely different world than your dad's D&D, and there are no
singing fairies here.
Does it require the Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook to play?
Okay, for legal requirements, it's "Requires the use of a Roleplaying
Game Core Book published by Wizards of the Coast(R)". Digital Burn is
focused primarily on being Modern d20 compatible, however, it's fairly
easy to adapt it to any of the Core books, such as the PHB.
What is the d20 system and Open Gaming?
According to the WotC website at www.wizards.com:
"The term refers to the game engine used in Wizards of the Coast's hobby
gaming roleplaying game. It is the basis for Dungeons & Dragons , Star
Wars and other products currently released or in development. The "d20
System" trademark consists of the words "d20 System" and the "d20 System"
logo. Additional information about the trademark can be viewed at:
tess.uspto.gov , by searching for "d20 system".
"An Open Game is a game that can be freely copied, modified, and
distributed, and a system for ensuring that material, once distributed as
an Open Game will remain permanently Open."
We've done our best to grant people as much access to the content in
Digital Burn for open use as was reasonably possible.
How come you chose d20 for a system?
We wanted to try to bring the cyberpunk genre to a new audience and d20
is the biggest boy on the block. There was a huge effort put into making
sure that EVERYONE would have the opportunity to experience Digital Burn
and that the entire book was as compatable and as easy to understand as
possible. We figured that if an entire new generation of players could
just pick up DB and begin play almost immediately, they would. It's all
about expanding the genre to new viewers.
Cool! So this means I can play a half dragon half celestial with wired
reflexes and cybernetic tail??!
If you've got the books for it, and it's d20, and your GM allows, go to
it. Knock yourself out. While the primary universe of DB isn't set up to
initally deal with Dragons, etc, it is easily adjustble to do so.
What kind of supplements do you plan to have out in the future?
At the present, Digital Burn is designed as a single project. If response
is high, and demand meets expectations, then there is always the
possiblity of future supplemental material. As with all things, the DB
team is still working, however, and we'll continue to make sure that the
product is supported through the web page at any rate.
Is there any way I can help? (Basically a question for like, submitting
printing errors, artwork, system ideas, etc.)
While we aren't accepting unsolicited material for publication, we are
looking to make areas of the web page available (in the near future) for
Fanfics, art, etc. So while we may not have the capacity to publish
everything that you guys want to submit, we will try to give you at least
a few avenues to share your ideas and work.
